Cavalleria rusticana

Pietro Mascagni (1863-1945)

I Pagliacci

Ruggero Leoncavallo (1857-1919)

Opera’s favourite double bill is brought to life as Italian tradition, passion and rustic justice burst forth onto the Festival Theatre stage. Rosario La Spina takes on the challenging feat of performing both leading tenor roles. In Cavalleria, he is Turiddu, the young man who abandons the devoted Santuzza for the married and alluring Lola. Such recklessness cannot go unpunished and Turiddu finds  himself in a duel with Lola’s husband Alfio, with tragic consequences.

In Pagliacci, the tables are turned, with La Spina singing the role of Canio, head of a travelling vaudeville troupe. His unfaithful  wife Nedda plans to run away with her lover, Silvio, but her plans are foiled by Tonio, an admirer she has rejected. For the heartbroken Canio, the show must go on, but the separation between life and art becomes blurred. With passions running high, there can be only one fatal conclusion.
