The Friends News

The Friends of State Opera welcome you to share in the experience of this rare double bill, Puccini’s comic opera Gianni Schicchi and Manuel de Falla’s Spanish drama La Vida Breve. This is a unique production for State Opera, staging these two operas in the beautiful acoustic setting of the Adelaide Town Hall with mainly a local cast, the wonderful State Opera Chorus and The Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. We are sure you will be thrilled by the performances of our artists and the inventiveness of our directors to bring these operas to life.

The Friends are proud to sponsor this State Opera production. For many years our sponsorship has enabled the company to produce many significant and ground breaking works. We have also played a role in supporting young artists, encouraging them to reach their potential. Through our Opera Voices Introductions, we also give members of the Friends the opportunity to gain an insight into the production and meet the Artists, Directors, Conductors, Designers and Technicians at the Opera Studio where all the hard work goes into making an opera come alive.

State Opera productions are world class. We have been able to attract national and international singers, directors and conductors to work with local artists to produce ground breaking works such as ‘Nixon in China’, ‘Dead Man Walking’ and more recently ‘The Philip Glass Trilogy’ and ‘Cloudstreet’. We have produced these well before other countries and to the highest standard. I have had the pleasure of enjoying operas throughout Europe and Australia, recently attending Wagner’s Ring Cycle in Leipzig. I thoroughly enjoyed the production, and it reminded me of the wonderful job State Opera did to stage this monumental opera twice and with three cycles for each opera. It was no mean feat.

The Friends congratulate State Opera for continuing its tradition of presenting a varied and stimulating program this year and we look forward to the company maintaining its pre-eminent place in the artistic life of South Australia.
